Dogs don’t have fingers .. yes, this is not new news, but think about it – there’s a reason fidget spinners and stress balls were created .. boredom and stress, so to put my opening line into context, dogs use their mouths to investigate tastes and textures to determine whether they are pleasing, this could be due to boredom, stress or lack of training, sometimes it can even be a dental issue.
Once you have ruled out the latter, consider whether your dog has enough interaction and stimulation on an every day basis. Are they getting adequate exercise for their breed? Dogs like routine and sometimes negative behaviours can come to the surface when that routine is disrupted. Some people say dogs can’t tell the time, but I disagree entirely. Dogs know what happens when and know your routine just as well as you do.
If you have ruled out dental issues and your dog has a jam packed daily routine and plenty of exercise and is still gnawing at the soft furnishings its time to deter them.
As a last resort you can dowse your home in an antichew spray whilst encouraging your dog to gnaw at something tasty and inviting like a pigs ear or bull horn filled with low fat soft cheese.
